Question 2 We have expanded and simplified some algebraic expressions below to their simplest forms. (i) Check each of the simplifications and see if there is a mistake. (ii) If there is a mistake, try to explain what could have gone wrong. (iii) Then write the correct expression. Is there a mistake? Yes What went wrong? The student forgot to multiply the second number in the brackets! They multiplied 2 × x but just wrote down -1. They multiplied 3 × x but just wrote down +4. We must distribute the multiplication to both parts. Correct solution 2(𝑥−1)+3(𝑥+4) =𝟐 × 𝒙+𝟐 × (−𝟏)+𝟑 × 𝒙+𝟑 × 𝟒 =2𝑥−2+3𝑥+12 =(2𝑥+3𝑥)+(12−2) =𝟓𝒙+𝟏𝟎
