Remainder in Algebraic ExpressionsLet’s try to answer this question Find a number that has a remainder of 3 when divided by 5. Now, we know that Numbers which are multiples of 5 leave remainder 0 when divided by 5 So, Numbers which leave remainder 0 = 5, 10, 15, 20, …. We can write them as Numbers = 5k Now, we need to find numbers which leave remainder 3 So, let’s add 3 to all these numbers We get Numbers = 5 + 3, 10 + 3, 15 + 3, 20 + 3, 25 + 3 …. = 8, 13, 18, 23, 28…. And, we can write them as Numbers which leave remainder 3 on dividing by 5 = 5k + 3 But, we can have one more case also, Let’s subtract 2 from the multiples of 5 We get Numbers = 5 – 2, 10 – 2, 15 – 2, 20 – 2, 25 – 2 …. = 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, …. Thus, we can write them as Numbers which leave remainder 3 on dividing by 5 = 5k – 2 So, we can express Numbers which leave remainder 3 on dividing by 5 as 5k + 3 or 5k – 2
