Question 2 (Page 170) Now, decide in which of the two groups will each child get a larger share: 1. Group 1: 3 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 4 children. Group 2: 7 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 10 children. 2. Group 1: 4 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 7 children. Group 2: 5 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 7 children. Which groups were easier to compare? Why?For first question Two groups are 𝟑/𝟒 and 𝟕/𝟏𝟎 To compare, we make denominator same Here, we make denominator 4 × 5 = 20 So, 𝟑/𝟒=𝟑/𝟒 ×𝟓/𝟓 =𝟏𝟓/𝟐𝟎 𝟕/𝟏𝟎=𝟕/𝟏𝟎 ×𝟐/𝟐 =𝟏𝟒/𝟐𝟎 Thus, we need to compare 𝟏𝟓/𝟐𝟎 and 𝟏𝟒/𝟐𝟎 Since denominator is same, we compare numerator 𝟏𝟓/𝟐𝟎 > 𝟏𝟒/𝟐𝟎 We can write 𝟑/𝟒 < 𝟕/𝟏𝟎 Thus, in 1st group child gets more juice For second question Group 1: 4 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 7 children. Group 2: 5 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 7 children. Two groups are 𝟒/𝟕 and 𝟓/𝟕 Since denominator is same, we compare numerator 𝟒/𝟕 < 𝟓/𝟓 Thus, in 2nd group child gets more juice Also, fractions in the second question were easier to compare because number of children is same in both groups, which makes the denominator same
