Question 1 - Page 69, 70 We shall do some simple estimates. It is a fun exercise, and you may find it amusing to know the various numbers around us. Remember, we are not interested in the exact numbers for the following questions. Share your methods of estimation with the class. 1. Steps you would take to walk: a. From the place you are sitting to the classroom door b. Across the school ground from start to end c. From your classroom door to the school gate d. From your school to your home Assume 1 step ≈ 0.5 meter a. From where you’re sitting to the classroom door: Estimate: About 10-15 steps. Method: I would visualize the distance in meters (likely 5-7 meters from a desk to the door in a standard classroom) and then estimate about two steps per meter. b. Across the school ground (start to end): Estimate: About 150-200 steps. Method: I would use a known distance as a reference. A running track is 100 meters long. Assuming a school ground is a similar length (perhaps 80-100 meters), and a person takes about 2 steps per meter, this estimate seems reasonable. c. From classroom door to school gate: Estimate: About 200-300 steps. Method: This journey can be broken down into smaller parts. I would estimate the steps needed for each part and add them together: Walk down the school corridor (e.g., 60 steps). Go down the stairs (e.g., 40 steps). Walk across the front yard to the gate (e.g., 150 steps). d. From school to home: Estimate: This answer depends entirely on the distance. For a home that is 2 kilometers away, a good estimate would be 3,000-4,000 steps. Method: First, estimate the total distance in kilometers. Then, multiply that by a rough estimate of steps per kilometer (a common estimate is 1,500-2,000 steps).
