What were the two types of states in India before 1947, and how were they ruled differently?

  • The two types of states in India before 1947 were provinces and Princely states.
  • Provinces were ruled directly by British officials such as Punjab and Bengal which was ruled directly by the British officials.
  • Princely states were ruled by local hereditary rulers who acknowledged British sovereignty in return for local autonomy such as Hyderabad which was ruled by the Nizam and Jaipur which was ruled by the Rajputs.
