convinces the lawyer that he knows where

conversationalist and was cheerful and friendly.

When he realizes that the narrator has not met, convinces the lawyer that he knows where Lutkins is.
He asks the
narrator to stay behind
while he enquired about Lutkins.

befools the narrator in the disguise

off of his gullibility.
