In the electrolytic refining of a metal M, what would you take as the anode, the cathode and the electrolyte?

Answer

In electrolytic refining,

  1. Impure Metal M is used as anode . 
  • It is connected to the positive terminal of the battery.
  1. A strip of pure metal M is used as a cathode . 
  • It is connected to the negative terminal of the battery.
  1. A solution of metal salt M is used as the electrolyte .
