Chapter 3 Class 10 - Metals and Non-Metals

Assertion (A): Gas bubbles are observed when sodium carbonate is added to dilute hydrochloric acid.

Reason (R): Carbon dioxide is given off in the reaction.

Answer

  • When sodium carbonate is added to dilute hydrochloric acid, a displacement reaction takes place.
  • Sodium is more reactive than Hydrogen (check reactivity series )
  • So it replaces Hydrogen from its solution to form Sodium Chloride solution
  • Hydrogen forms HCl  and CO 2 is released in gaseous form.

The reaction is as follows:

Thus,

  • The Assertion is True.
  • Reason is also True.
