Give one example of a situation in which

(ii) the mean is not an appropriate measure of central tendency but the median is an appropriate measure of central tendency.

When the data has a very high or a very low value, then mean is not an appropriate measure of central tendency.

Then, median can be an appropriate measure

Example –

Runs scored by Shikhar Diwan in 5 matches,

20,  21, 23, 100,  25

Here, Mean  = (20 + 21 + 23 + 25 + 100)/5 = 189/5 = 37.8

But Median ,

Arrange data in ascending Order

20, 21, 23,  25, 100

Middle term = ((5+1)/2) rd Term = 3 rd Term

Here 3 rd term is 23

Thus, Median = 23 is an appropriate measure of central tendency
