Why are sound waves called mechanical waves?

Answer 

Those waves which require a medium to propagate are called Mechanical Waves.

Sound Waves can only travel through a medium like solid, liquid or gas.

It cannot travel through a vacuum.

Thus, sound waves are mechanical waves
