The troposphere is the lowest, weather-filled layer; the stratosphere is the stable, ozone-holding layer above it.
- The troposphere extends up to about 12 km; the stratosphere up to about 50 km.
- Nearly all weather occurs in the troposphere; the stratosphere is largely cloud-free.
- Temperature decreases with height in the troposphere, but the stratosphere is far more stable.
