Chapter 4 - A Tale of Valour: Major Somnath Sharma (Unit 2)

This is the story of Major Somnath Sharma and the brave men that he led on a mission to protect the Srinagar airport from falling into the hands of a guerrilla force trained and backed by Pakistan.

This is a story of how 90 men managed to foil the plan of some 500 infiltrators who wanted to capture Srinagar and the Kashmir Valley and deliver a blow to newly-independent India.

  • Major Somnath Sharma and his men were given a very important job: stop the Srinagar airport from being captured.
  • Only about 90 Indian soldiers eventually faced a force of about 500 invaders.
  • If the attackers captured Srinagar and the airport, newly independent India would suffer a serious military loss. foil the plan = stop a plan from succeeding
infiltrators = people who secretly invade
deliver a blow = cause serious damage or loss
Mission simple words mein: Srinagar airport ko bachana . Problem yeh thi ki Indian soldiers bahut kam the aur attackers bahut zyada.

Longer Short Answer 3 marks
Why does the chapter stress that about 90 men faced about 500 infiltrators? 3 Marks
How to answer: Explain what the numbers show about difficulty and courage.
View Answer Hide Answer

Answer: The numbers show how unequal the battle was. D Company had far fewer soldiers than the attacking force, yet it still resisted. This makes the company’s courage, discipline and ability to delay the enemy more significant.

90 vs 500 ka difference batata hai ki battle kitni unequal thi. Isi liye unka resist karna aur bhi impressive lagta hai.
