Q10 (Medium): You are given six cells marked A, B, C, D, E, and F. Some of these are working and some are not. Design an activity to identify which of them are working. (i) List the items that you require. (ii) Write the procedure that you will follow. (iii) With the items, carry out the activity to identify the cells that are working.

Answer:
We have studied that a working cell provides electrical energy to light a bulb in a complete circuit . This is why we can test each cell one at a time using a simple circuit.

  • (i) Items required: one bulb (or LED) of known working condition, a switch , connecting wires , and the six cells A to F
  • (ii) Procedure: connect the bulb , the switch , and one cell at a time using wires to form a simple, complete circuit
  • Close the switch and observe whether the bulb glows
  • (iii) Carry out the activity: repeat this test for each cell (A, B, C, D, E, F) one by one, noting the result for every cell in a table

Conclusion: The cells for which the bulb glows are the working cells ; the cells for which it does not glow are the non-working (dead) cells .
