Sample Descriptive Piece: A Clay Diya

The artefact I am describing is a clay diya, a small oil lamp traditionally used during festivals and religious ceremonies across India.

The diya is circular in shape, approximately five centimetres in diameter and two centimetres in height. It has a small indentation in the centre to hold oil and a pinched spout on one side where a cotton wick is placed. It is made from natural clay, which is moulded by hand or on a potter's wheel, then dried in the sun and fired in a kiln to harden it.

The clay diya originated in ancient India and has been in use for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that similar lamps were used in the Indus Valley Civilisation. Traditionally, the diya is associated with the festival of Diwali, the festival of lights, but it is also used during prayers, weddings, and other religious events. In modern times, diyas are widely available in markets across India and are also exported as decorative items. They are used both for their traditional purpose and as home decorations during festive seasons.

Factual description mein apna opinion mat do. Sirf facts likho: cheez ka naam, shape, size, material, kahan se aata hai, kaise use hota hai.
