Class 7 (Curiosity)
Chapter 12 Class 7 - Earth, Moon, and the Sun (Curiosity)
Project 2
Project

The Earth goes around the Sun in an oval-shaped path. Draw two circles with the same centre, one with a radius of 14.7 cm and another with a radius of 15.2 cm. If 1 cm corresponds to 10 million km, the two circles represent the closest and farthest distances from the Sun. Note how small the difference between these two distances is.

Two nearly equal circles for the Earth's distances.

Key Points
The two distances are almost the same, so distance does not cause seasons.

Key Points

  • Draw two circles from one centre, radii 14.7 cm and 15.2 cm.
  • They stand for the closest and farthest distances from the Sun.
  • The difference is only 0.5 cm, or 5 million km.
  • This is tiny compared to the huge total distance.
  • So changing distance is not the reason for seasons.
The orbit is almost circular, so distance changes very little.
