Median when a new term is Added or RemovedLet’s Consider the data: 4, 14, 7, 8, 12 Find the median We found that Median = 8 Now, we have to answer the question Will including a new value to the data increase or decrease the median? Let’s add a new term 11 in it So, our data becomes: 4, 7, 8, 11, 12, 14 Finding Median Since Number of terms is even We use the average of the two middle numbers Our middle numbers are 8 & 11 Thus, Median = (8 + 11)/2 = 19/2 = 9.5 Thus, Median increased It increased because the new value (11) was greater than the old median (8), the median increased. If you were to add a value less than the median, the median would decrease. Let’s look at the Dot Graphs Similarly, we can find out Median is data is removed as well
