MedianWhen outliers mess up the average, we use the Median. The Median is simply the middle number when the data is sorted. How to find the Median? SORT the numbers from smallest to largest. Pick the number in the exact middle. Special Rule: If there are two numbers in the middle (because you have an even number of items), you take the average of those two. Now, let’s find Median for 4 and 5 terms Median of 4 numbers Find the median of 2, 6, 12, 10 First, we write the data in ascending order 2, 6, 10, 12 Since Number of terms is even We use the average of the two middle numbers Our middle numbers are 6 & 10 Thus, Median = (6 + 10)/2 = 16/2 = 8 Putting in a dot plot Median of 5 numbers Find the median of 4, 14, 7, 8, 12 First, we write the data in ascending order 4, 7, 8, 12, 14 Since Number of terms is odd Median is the middle number Thus, Median = 170 cm Putting in a dot plot
