Pattern of Triangles & Holes in Sierpinski GasketWe can figure the Math behind the pattern. We use two variables to track what is happening at any given step (๐‘›): ๐‘ป_๐’ : The number of Remaining triangles ๐‘ฏ_๐’ : The number of Holes created Now, Step 0: ๐‘‡_0=1 (Just the starting triangle), ๐ป_0=0 (No holes yet) Step 1: ๐‘‡_1=3 (We kept 3 out of 4), ๐ป_1=1 (We removed 1) Step 2: ๐‘‡_2=3 ร— 3=9(3^2 ),๐ป_2=1(old)+3(new)=4 Step 3: ๐‘‡_3=3 ร— 3 ร— 3=27(3^3 ),๐ป_3=1+3+3^2= 13 The Formulas Thus, Remaining Triangles: ๐‘‡_๐‘›=3^๐‘› Holes: ๐ป_๐‘›=๐ป_(๐‘›โˆ’1)+๐‘‡_(๐‘›โˆ’1) (which expands to 1+3+โ”œ 3^2+โ€ฆ+3^(๐‘›โˆ’1) )
