How Tall is Your Class?We are given Heights of students in a class below The table below shows the heights of students in a Grade 5 class in centimeters. Let’s find plot this data in a dot plot, and find Mean & Median. We deduce Variability from the dot plots We observe that Girls are taller than the boys, on an average But, boys are very short and very tall as compared to girls – so Heights of boys are more variable For boys’ heights, mean < median (142.94 < 144) indicating a small influence of values on the lower side. For girls’ heights too, mean < median (146.9 < 148) indicating a small influence of values on the lower side. Now, we are asked some questions Question: How many students are taller than the class average height? Now, Class Mean is 144.4 cm (from dot plot). Let's count students taller than 144.4 from the table in Image 5: Boys: 147, 154, 158, 155, 146, 146, 145, 150 (That's 8 boys). Girls: 150, 154, 145, 148, 156, 150, 150 (That's 7 girls). Thus, Total = 8 + 7 = 15 students. Question: How many boys are taller than the class average height? Since we counted 7 boys smaller than average height (out of 15) Thus, Boys taller than average height = 15 – 7 = 8 ∴ 8 Boys are taller than average height of 144.4 cm
