Are We on the Same Page?We answer this question Do you read newspapers? Have you noticed how many pages a newspaper has on different days of the week — is it the same or different? The list below shows the number of pages for a particular newspaper from Monday to Sunday: 16, 18, 20, 22, 26, 16, 10. Mark the data, the mean, and the median on the dot plot below. Now, Mean = (𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠)/(𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠) = (16 + 18 + 20 + 22 + 26 + 16 + 10)/7 = 128/7 = 18.285… For Median We sort the data in ascending order 10, 16, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26 Number of observations = 7 Since number of odd, Median will be the middle number Thus, Median = ((𝟕 + 𝟏)/𝟐)^𝒕𝒉 observation = (𝟖/𝟐)^𝒕𝒉 observiation = 4th observation = 18 Marking the data, the mean, and the median on the dot plot below Data: 10, 16, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26, Mean = 18.285 & Median = 18
