Average as Fair ShareThink of the average as leveling everything out. If Ravi has 10 apples and you have 2, and you want to be "fair," you put them together (12) and divide them equally (6 each) Both of you got the average number of apples Let’s do a book example Shreyas and 4 of his friends have collected the following numbers of guavas: 3, 8, 10, 5, and 4. Parag and 5 of his friends have collected the following numbers of guavas: 5, 4, 6, 3, 4, and 8. Each group will share their guavas equally amongst themselves. In which group will each member get a bigger share of guavas? Let’s find Average for both groups Shreyas’s Group Number of guavas they have is 3, 8, 10, 5 & 4 Thus, Total Guavas = 3 + 8 + 10 + 5 + 4 = 30 Number of people = 5 Thus, Average guavas = (𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐺𝑢𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑠)/(𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒) = 30/5 = 6 ∴ Each person will get 6 guavas Parag’s Group Number of guavas they have is 5, 4, 6, 3, 4 & 8 Thus, Total Guavas = 5+4+6+3+4+8 = 30 Number of people = 6 Thus, Average guavas = (𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐺𝑢𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑠)/(𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒) = 30/6 = 5 ∴ Each person will get 5 guavas So, the members of Shreyas’s group get 1 more guava each than the members of Parag’s group. Let’s visualise it in terms of Average as a fair-share
