The following are the main causes of poverty in India:

  1. Low level of economic development under the British colonial administration.
    The policies of the colonial government ruined traditional handicrafts and discouraged the development of industries like textiles.

  2. Many work opportunities were created for the country's citizens as a result of the development of the Green Revolution, but they were insufficient given the number of job searchers.

  3. Another key contributor to poverty in India is the unequal distribution of resources and land.

  4. In order to fulfill social obligations and religious ceremonies the poor end up spending a lot which results in poverty.

  5. Another feature of high poverty rates has been the huge income inequalities.
