When the First Monsoon Rain Arrived
For weeks the afternoon sky had been pale and dusty. Then one evening a dark wall of clouds gathered over the rooftops and the wind suddenly turned cool.
The first drops struck the dry road like scattered beads. Within minutes the smell of wet earth rose from the ground, leaves shone darker green, and the steady sound of rain covered the traffic.
What attracted me most was the speed of the transformation. The same street that had looked tired an hour earlier seemed washed, bright and alive.
The rain lasted less than an hour, but it reminded me how strongly a natural event can change both a landscape and the people looking at it.
