1. Grandpa (75, retired lawyer) moves to the city after a fall at his brick house in town. Ravi's mother Vidya worries about his memory and health, and asks Ravi to watch over him on the first day of school holidays.
  2. Grandpa wants to buy the Tamil newspaper. He outsmarts Ravi with a clever argument, picks up his mahogany walking stick, puts on his yellow cap, and walks out.
  3. Ravi secretly follows Grandpa: hides behind a bush in the park (a child spots him), then behind a banyan tree at the tea stall (vendors mock him). Grandpa is relaxed and cheerful; Ravi is the one in trouble.
  4. Grandpa boards a bus. Ravi jumps on too - and discovers the yellow cap is worn by a total stranger! Grandpa gave his cap to a kind old gentleman at the barber shop.
  5. Ravi rushes home frantic. Grandpa is already there, snoring in his room. Ravi hugs the sleeping old man, overcome with affection and relief.
  6. When Ravi's mother asks what happened, Grandpa calmly says Ravi "disappeared". Then - birthday surprise! Grandpa gives gifts to everyone, and gives Ravi a detective story book with a knowing smile.
