In this chapter we will define work done by a constant force, link work to energy through the work-energy theorem, meet the different forms of energy, study mechanical energy as kinetic and potential energy and its conservation, define power, and see how simple machines — pulley, inclined plane and lever — make tasks easier.

Work
Done when a force displaces an object in the direction of the force; measured in joules.
Energy
The capacity to do work; it changes form but the total is conserved.
and
The thread joining them: work done on an object shows up as a change in its energy.
Simple
Everyday devices with no complicated parts — a pulley, a ramp, a lever.
Machines
They change the size or direction of the force we apply, making work easier (never less).
