- Solution
- A uniform mixture formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent.
- Solute
- The substance that dissolves; the solid, or the liquid present in smaller amount.
- Solvent
- The substance that dissolves the solute; the liquid, or the one in larger amount.
- Uniform mixture
- A mixture whose components are evenly spread and not seen separately.
- Non-uniform mixture
- A mixture whose components are unevenly spread and can be seen separately.
- Saturated solution
- A solution that cannot dissolve any more solute at that temperature.
- Unsaturated solution
- A solution that can dissolve more solute at a given temperature.
- Concentration
- The amount of solute present in a fixed quantity of solution or solvent.
- Solubility
- The maximum solute that dissolves in a fixed quantity of solvent at a temperature.
- Mass
- The quantity of matter present in an object, measured in g or kg.
- Weight
- The force with which Earth attracts an object, measured in newtons.
- Volume
- The space occupied by an object or substance.
- Meniscus
- The curved surface a liquid forms in a measuring cylinder.
- Density
- The mass present in a unit volume of a substance (mass ÷ volume).
- Relative density
- The density of a substance divided by the density of water; a unitless number.
- Dissolved oxygen
- The small amount of oxygen dissolved in water that sustains aquatic life.
