What is an Electric Switch?

It is a simple device that either completes or breaks an electric circuit .

  • Switch in ON position — the circuit is complete and lamp glows .
Example: Torch switch ON, room light switch ON
  • Switch in OFF position — there is an air gap between its terminals; circuit is broken and lamp does not glow .
Example: Torch switch OFF, room light switch OFF
  • A switch helps us use electricity as per our requirement — we turn devices on/off as needed.
Example: Switching a fan on only when needed
  • A homemade switch can be made with drawing pins , a safety pin , and a piece of cardboard .
