Since odd × odd = odd, the total number of small squares is odd. (b) 42 × 78 42 is even. Since one of the numbers is even, we don't even need to check the other one. The result will be even. The total number of small squares is even. (c) 135 × 654 135 is odd. 654 is even. Since odd × even = even, the total number of small squares is even.
