Question 2 - Figure it out (Page 162) Can all fractions greater than 1 be written as such mixed numbers? From the examples in Question 1 8/3=2 2/3 11/5=2 1/5 9/4=2 1/4 We notice that Numerator > Denominator in all the fractions So, fractions are greater than 1 And they are written as mixed fractions Question 2 - Figure it out (Page 162) Can all fractions greater than 1 be written as such mixed numbers? From the examples in Question 1 8/3=2 2/3 11/5=2 1/5 9/4=2 1/4 We notice that Numerator > Denominator in all the fractions So, fractions are greater than 1 And they are written as mixed fractions But, what if the fractions completely divide Like 9/3=3 10/5=2 16/4=5 Thus, the answer is no Reason is A fraction can be written as a mixed number only when dividing the numerator by the denominator leaves a remainder.
