Scientific NotationScientific Notation is a special way for writing numbers 5.9 × 102 5900Number Number in Scientific Notation 149500000000 Big Number 1.495 × 1011 Big Number in Scientific Notation 0.0004 Small Number 4.0 × 10-4 Small Number in Scientific Notation But why do we write Numbers in Scientific Notation? Scientific notation is used to represent really small or large numbers so that they are easy to read, compare, and do calculations with. Like Distance of Earth from Sun is 149500000000 m But that is too big a number to understand So, we write 149500000000 m = 1.495 × 1011 m Or we can just write Distance of Earth from Sun = 1.5 × 1011 m Another Example Distance from Earth to the Moon is about 385,000,000 m Writing in Scientific Notation 385,000,0000 = 3.85 × 108 Thus, we can compare how big is Distance of Earth & Sun than Distance of Earth & Moon
