Example 2 - Page 137 Four square flower beds each of side 4 m are in four corners on a piece of land 12 m long and 10 m wide. Find the area of the remaining part of the land.Remaining area of land = Area of rectangular land − Area of four square flower beds = Area of rectangular land − 4 × Area of square flower bed Area of rectangular land Length of land = l = 12 m Breadth of land = b = 10 m Area of land = l × b = 12 × 10 = 120 m2 Area of square flower bed Side of flower bed = a = 4 m Area of flower bed = a × a = 4 × 4 = 16 m2 Now, Remaining area of land = Area of rectangular land − 5 × Area of square flower bed = 120 − 4 × 16 = 120 − 64 = 56 m2 ∴ 56 m2 of land remaining besides flower beds
