Caste rules are rigid because:

- They are justified by religious texts, myths, legends, stories and rituals that give divine sanction to caste divisions and duties.
- They are internalized by people who accept their caste identity and role as natural and inevitable and do not question or resist the discrimination and oppression they face or inflict on others.
- They are reproduced by practices such as endogamy, occupation, food habits, dress codes, language, etc. that create and maintain visible markers of caste difference and separation.
