Friction depends on

  • Nature of Surface - smooth or rough
  • Weight of object on the surface

Nature of Surface

If surface is smooth, interlocking of both surfaces will be less. Thus, friction will be less

If surface is rough, interlocking of both surfaces will be more. Thus, friction will be more

Example

Concrete road is rough .If we run on it, we do not slip as there is more friction

Muddy road is smoother. if we run on it , we can slip as there is less friction

Example 2

In new shoes, soles are rough. So we can walk fast without falling

In old shoes, soles become smooth. So if we walk fast,we can slip

Weight of object on the surface

I t is easier to push a lighter box than a heavier box
