Question 15 (Page 228) There is an increasing demand of trees to meet the requirements of industries and for housing. Therefore, trees are being felled. Is it justified? Discuss and prepare a brief report. BRIEF REPORT: IS TREE FELLING FOR DEVELOPMENT JUSTIFIED? 1. Arguments for tree cutting: Growing population needs more houses Wood required for paper, furniture, construction Economic development necessary 2. Arguments against unlimited cutting: Trees take decades to grow, cut in weeks (unsustainable) Loss of biodiversity and animal habitats Increases air pollution, reduces oxygen Soil erosion and water scarcity Future generations will suffer Conclusion: Use alternative materials (steel, recycled products) Plant more trees than we cut Use wood efficiently without wastage Develop technologies reducing forest dependence
