Question 6 (Page 228) It is difficult to regrow forests. Justify this statement. Reasons why regrowing forests is difficult are: 1. Time required: Trees take 10 - 20 years to become fully grown So Complete forest ecosystem needs decades or centuries 2. Ecosystem complexity: Forest is not just trees but complex system and has many interdependent plants, animals, insects, microorganisms 3. Soil development: When forest cut, soil loses fertility and developing proper forest soil again takes many years as forest soil has special nutrients from decaying leaves 4. Protection needed: Young plants need right conditions to grow and need protection from grazing animals 5. Lost species: We cannot recreate exactly same forest as original forest had rare, specialized species which may be lost forever
