Energy from the SunHeat and Light Solar Solar energy is the energy emitted by the Sun that can be used to produce heat, light, etc. Uses of Solar Energy Example 1 Drying Food Items Dry Chillies We use the heat from the Sun to dry food items So that we can store it for long time. Raw Mangoes (Pickle) Uses of Solar Energy Example 2 Drying Clothes We use the heat from the sun for drying wet clothes Sun's heat evaporates water from clothes which makes them dry quickly Uses of Solar Energy Example 3 Plants Making Food Plants use the heat from the sun for preparing their food during Photosynthesis In Between Questions What are some of the activities for which we need heat and light?Activities needing heat: Drying clothes after washing Drying grains and vegetables for storage Keeping our body warm in winter Activities needing light: Seeing things around us Plants making food through photosynthesis In Between Questions Bhoomi draws some pictures to show the uses of heat and light from the Sun. Help her by adding more examples. Draw the pictures and write their descriptions in the space provided.Drying of Grains Making Salt Sun Basking Real - Life Examples Example 1 Solar Panels Solar Panels are generally seen on the rooftops of buildings or on top of street lights They help in generating Electricity which can be used at homes Real - Life Examples Example 2 Solar Cooker Energy from Sun can also be directly used for Cooking in a Solar Cooker Hence, no fuel or gas needed to cook food Real - Life Examples Example 3 Solar Water Heater Energy from Sun can be used for heating water in a Solar Water Heater What is Sun’s Role as Energy Source?Sun is main source of energy on Earth And all living beings dependent on Sun for energy Plants get energy from Sun and produce food Animals eat plants and grow We get food from both plants and animals This cycle on Earth is possible due to Sun In Between Questions (Page 215) Who is correct, Bhoomi or Surya?Surya is correct: As the Grass grows due to Sun’s energy And later Cow eats grass and gets energy from it So, Cow is ultimately getting Energy from Sun In Between Questions What will happen if the Sun is not visible for a few days?Immediate effects: Would need artificial lighting during daytime also Temperature would drop significantly making it very cold Solar panels would stop generating electricity Long term effect: Plants could not make food through photosynthesis So, Crops would not grow properly Animals and Humans would struggle to find food Effects on environment: Water cycle would be disrupted (less evaporation) Wind patterns would weaken (wind created by Sun's uneven heating) Overall life on Earth would face serious difficulties
