Question 8 It is good farming practice to apply 10 tonnes of cow manure for 1 acre of land. A farmer is planning to grow tomatoes in a plot of size 200 ft by 500 ft. How much manure should he buy? (Please refer to the section on Unit Conversions earlier in this chapter). We follow these steps We find area of plot in square feet We convert area into acres as manure is in terms of acres We find amount of Manure Area of plot Find the area of the plot in square feet. Area = 200 ft × 500 ft = 1,00,000 sq ft Convert sq ft to acres. We know that 1 Acre =𝟒𝟑,𝟓𝟔𝟎 square feet Thus, 1 square feet = 𝟏/(𝟒𝟑,𝟓𝟔𝟎 ) acres And, 1,00,000 sq ft = 100,000/43,560 ≈𝟐.𝟐𝟗𝟔 acres. Calculate manure needed Since we apply 10 tonnes of cow manure for 1 acre of land We can say Manure needed for 1 acre = 10 tonnes Manure needed for 2.296 acres = 10 × 2.296 tonnes = 22.96 tonnes Thus, the farmer needs approximately 23 tonnes Note: If your textbook uses a rounded conversion like 1 acre =40,000sqft, the answer would be exactly 2.5 acres ×10=25 tonnes.
