The conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid is considered an oxidation reaction because oxygen atoms are added to ethanol to convert it to ethanoic acid .

Oxidising agents are substances that get reduced in order to oxidise other substances.

In the reaction given above, the oxidising agents that can be used are alkaline KMnO 4 or acidic K 2 Cr 2 O 7 .
