What is the function of Bacteria in digestion of cellulose?

 

  • In Ruminants (Buffaloes and Deer), the bacteria present in rumen helps in digestion of cellulose .
  • In Horses and Rabbits, they have a large sac-like structure called the Caecum which is present between the food pipe and small intestine.
  • The cellulose of the food is digested here in Caecum by the action of certain bacteria.
