What are Ionic Compounds?

They are compounds containing more than one ions

Example

Sodium Chloride (NaCl) contains 2 ions;

Positively charged Sodium (Na + ) and Negatively charged Chloride (Cl - )

It has equal number of positively and negatively charged ions

So overall charge is 0

What is a Molecule?

A group of atoms chemically bonded together is Here are the valency of a few elements:
called Molecule.

Difference between Polyatomic Ions and Ionic Compounds

Polyatomic Ions

Ionic Compounds

They are ions

They are compounds

They usually do not exist on their own

They can exist on their own

They are positively or negatively charged

They do not carry any net charge

Ammonium (NH4 + ) is positively charged

Chloride (Cl - ) is negatively charged

Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

It has equal number of positively charged Na + ions and Negatively charged Cl - ions

So overall charge is 0
