Why is sound wave called a longitudinal wave?

Answer 

In longitudinal waves, particles of wave move in direction of propagation of waves.

In a sound wave, the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth in the same direction of the disturbance.

Therefore, sound wave is called a longitudinal wave.
