Multiplicative Identity

1 is called multiplicative identity.

  a × 1 = 1 × a = a

Multiplicative Inverse

Reciprocal of a number is called multiplicative inverse

Like

Multiplicative inverse of 2 = 1/2

Multiplicative inverse of 4 = 1/4

Let’s do some more examples and check as well

Multiplicative inverse of –6

Multiplicative inverse for −6 = 1/(-6) = (-1)/6

Check : Number × Multiplicative Inverse  = 1

L.H.S : Number × Multiplicative Inverse

= −6 × (-1)/6

= 1

= R.H.S

Hence, (-1)/6 is Multiplicative inverse of –6

Multiplicative inverse of 2/3

Multiplicative inverse for 2/3 = 3/2

Check : Number × Multiplicative Inverse  = 1

L.H.S : Number × Multiplicative Inverse

=  2/3 × 3/2

= 1

= R.H.S

Hence, 3/2 is Multiplicative inverse of 2/3

Multiplicative inverse of (-4)/5

Multiplicative inverse for (-4)/5 = 5/(−4) = (−5)/4

Check : Number × Multiplicative Inverse  = 1

L.H.S : Number × Multiplicative Inverse

=  (-4)/5 × (-5)/4

= 1

= R.H.S

Hence, (-5)/4 is Multiplicative inverse of (-4)/5

Multiplicative inverse of 9/80

Multiplicative inverse for 9/80 = 80/9

Check : Number × Multiplicative Inverse  = 1

L.H.S : Number × Multiplicative Inverse

= 9/80 × 80/9

= 1

= R.H.S

Hence, 9/80 is Multiplicative inverse of 80/9
