Addition and Subtraction of Like Fractions

Like fractions are those fractions where denominators are same

 

Eg:   1/3, 2/3, 4/3, 8/3

         2/9, 4/9, 6/9, 8/9

 

Add 1/3 & 4/3

  1/3  + 4/3

 

Since denominator is same,

we add numerators

 

    = (1+ 4)/3

    = 5/3

 

Subtract 2 / 9 from 6 / 9

  6/9  − 2/9

 

Since denominator is same,

we subtract numerators

    = (6 - 2)/9

    = 4/9
