Filter Coffee ExampleFilter coffee is a beverage made by mixing coffee decoction with milk. Manjunath usually mixes 15 mL of coffee decoction with 35 mL of milk to make one cup of filter coffee in his coffee shop. In this case, we can say that the ratio of coffee decoction to milk is 15 : 35. If customers want ‘stronger’ filter coffee, Manjunath mixes 20 mL of decoction with 30 mL of milk. The ratio here is 20 : 30 And when they want ‘lighter’ filter coffee, he mixes 10 mL of coffee and 40 mL of milk, making the ratio 10 : 40. In all 3 cases, Total filter coffee = 50 mL But, the one with more coffee is stronger, and the one with less coffee is lighter Normal 15: 35 Lighter 10: 40 Stronger 10: 40 Now, we are asked a question The following table shows the different ratios in which Manjunath mixes coffee decoction with milk. Write in the last column if the coffee is stronger or lighter than the regular coffee Basically, we have to find Ratio of Coffee : Milk for each And compare with 15: 35 First, we simplify 15 : 35 15: 35 = 15/35 = 3/7 = 3 : 7 Which means 3 parts coffee to 7 parts of milk Now, let’s look at each part 300 : 600 → 1 : 2 (or 3 : 6). Stronger. 150 : 500 → 3 : 10 (Milk is 10, which is higher than 7). Lighter. 200 : 400 → 1 : 2. Stronger. 24 : 56 → Divide by 8 → 3 : 7. Regular. 100 : 300 → 1 : 3 (or 3 : 9). Lighter.
